Dr. Emilee Burgess, PhD, C. Psych.
Dr. Burgess is a Registered Clinical Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Dr. Burgess has extensive experience in providing therapy for individuals with a variety of concerns including: anxiety, self-criticism, perfectionism, depressed mood, eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating), body image concerns, negative thinking, communication difficulties, difficulties forming peer or romantic relationships with others, and emotional dysregulation.
Dr. Burgess works to provide care in a way that is non-judgmental, compassionate, and client-centred. She is experienced providing treatment for individuals from the 2SLGBTQI+ community and is committed to providing culturally sensitive treatment for all clients. Dr. Burgess has experience with a variety of therapy approaches including: Mindfulness and Self-Compassion approaches, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Radically-Open DBT. After an initial consultation, she will recommend an evidence-based treatment plan based on your symptoms, history, preferences, and goals for therapy. ​

In terms of education, Dr. Burgess completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During her PhD, Dr. Burgess spent one year as a visiting clinical researcher in the eating disorder unit at King's College London, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience. She subsequently completed her pre-doctoral residency at the Nova Scotia Health Authority, where she worked in the Borderline Personality Disorder Clinic and the Outpatient Eating Disorders Clinic. Dr. Burgess completed her supervised practice in Toronto and subsequently worked in private practice and hospital settings in the GTA. Dr. Burgess also completed a one year clinical research postdoctoral fellowship at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where she examined the effectiveness of mindfulness interventions for anxiety and depression. Dr. Burgess has worked in a variety of settings including outpatient, inpatient, partial-hospitalization, and private practice settings in the United States, UK, and Canada.
In addition to her work as a clinician, Dr. Burgess has published a number of peer-reviewed journal articles in the areas of eating and weight disorders, mindfulness interventions for mood and anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders. She has presented her research at numerous international research conferences and received several awards for her research in the area of eating and weight disorders. Dr. Burgess also enjoys providing supervision for clinical students in training and taught the clinical practicum course for graduate students at the University of Toronto, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), in the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development. Dr. Burgess has also assisted several healthcare organizations in the development and evaluation of treatment programs.
